Reporting a Death

To report the death of a KCERA member or a survivor who was receiving a continuance from the death of a KCERA member, call the KCERA office at (661) 381-7700. If you are the designated beneficiary, a KCERA team member will explain what survivorship benefits, if any, are payable to you.  KCERA will provide the designated beneficiary with the necessary and required forms.

In addition to the completion and submission of any required forms,  a copy of the following documentation is required for all member and survivor deaths:

  • A clear, legible copy of the deceased's death certificate
  • A clear, legible copy of the designated beneficiary's government-issued identification card
  • A clear, legible copy of the Marriage License or state issued Domestic Partner Registration (Retiree death only)

If the designated beneficiary is a minor child (under the age of 18 at the time of the member's death), it is advisable to contact the KCERA office and speak with representative for details regarding your situation. Additional documentation is required of the legally appointed guardian.  In general, those documents would include:

  • A clear, legible copy of the minor child's birth certificate
  • A clear, legible copy of the guardian's government-issued identification card
  • A copy of the court signed guardianship papers, including financial guardianship
